Asus Rampage V Extreme X99 Motherboard Review

Price and Where to Buy

The Asus Rampage V Extreme is available now. At the time this review was published, it comes with a retail price of $479.99. For UK visitors, check it at Amazon UK here. It also comes with a limited 3-year warranty from the manufacturer.

Just a note, I think Asus has already discontinued the one we reviewed above. Instead, they are currently pushing the Asus Rampage V Extreme/U3.1 that comes with a USB 3.1 add-in card.

ASUS Rampage V Extreme U3.1

Asus Rampage V Extreme Review: Conclusion

The Asus Rampage V Extreme is truly a motherboard for the hardcore overclockers and enthusiasts. It has everything that you need in order to push the limits of your system. Pair it up with the Intel Core i7-5960X, add some 64GB of DDR4 memory clocked at 3300MHz, plus a PCIE SSD, and put two or four graphics cards and you have an overkill gaming machine.

Building a full blown system with this motherboard will definitely cost you a lot. That’s why I think this motherboard is definitely not for everyone. If you are on a budget (or limited budget) and you want to build a gaming PC, well this is not for you. Better get a Z97 motherboard and pair it with the latest and best graphics card that you can afford. Even the cheaper X99 motherboards are more expensive than most mainstream motherboards. Building a Skylake based system isn’t really a cheap option as well (for now), due to the cost of DDR4 memory. But prices of DDR4 memory are starting to decline slowly, probably by next year we will already see a significant price change.

Like I said earlier, the Rampage V Extreme is geared towards enthusiasts and extreme overclockers, system builders who plan to build a workstation/server, or similar environment that requires heavy multiple tasks and workloads. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to show in this review the prowess of this motherboard, since the CPU that we borrowed didn’t overclock well. But if you have a far better CPU, I’m pretty you can overclock it easily.

Finally, the Asus Rampage V Extreme is truly an “Extreme” motherboard with a long list of features. If you are looking for the best X99 motherboard there is and budget is not an issue for you, this motherboard should definitely be on your top list.
