The new Haswell Refresh-K Series, codenamed Intel Devil’s Canyon, Intel Core i7-4790K and Core i5-4690K processors were originally exclusive for the new Intel 9 Series-based motherboards (the Z97 and H87 motherboards). However, before the official launching of the said processors, there were already many reports claiming that the Intel Core i7-4790K is working on Z87 based motherboards. And now, it is official that the older 8 series users can enjoy the new Devil’s Canyon processors just by updating their BIOS provided by their motherboard’s manufacturer. But not all 8 series boards are compatible with the Devil’s Canyon. Most motherboards that are compatible with the new Devil’s Canyon are the more popular Z87 and H87 boards. UPDATE: Upon recently checking on the list provided by Intel (the sources), it seems that Intel has totally changed the list and removed all the 8 series motherboards and replaced them with all the latest 9 series motherboards. At the time I posted this article, the motherboards listed from the source pages are the motherboards mentioned above. It looks like Intel doesn’t intend the Devil’s Canyon to be used in older 8 series motherboards. If you are an owner of an 8 series motherboard and plan to upgrade to a Devil’s Canyon using your current motherboard, I strongly recommend that you ask your motherboard manufacturer first to see if your motherboard can really support Devil’s Canyon.
UPDATE 2:I checked some of the popular Asus Z87 motherboards and all of them have a BIOS update for “Enhance compatibility for new Anniversary Edition and Devil’s Canyon CPU”. I think MSI released a BIOS updated as well. Again, I recommend you check first your motherboard’s respective manufacturer first before upgrading to Devil’s Canyon.
Note: The list above, although officially provided by Intel, is definitely not a complete list. There are other Z87 and/or H87 (including the newer 9 series) motherboards that are not listed above that could support the latest Devil’s Canyon processors. If you happen to know an older motherboard that supports either the Intel Core i7-4790K or the Core i5-4690K and is not included in the list provided by Intel, kindly include it in the comment section below. If you don’t own either one of them yet, both the Intel Core i7-4790K and Core i5-4690K Devil’s Canyon processors are now available for order. Shipping will start as early as June 20. The Core i7-4790K is priced at around $333.99. Meanwhile, the Core i5-4690K is currently priced at $236.99.

What about MSI Z87-G55? -_-

I visited MSI’s page for the Z87-G55. They released a BIOS version A.5 dated 2014-02-25. According to the description “- Improved RAID card compatibility.
– Improve memory compatibility.
– Updated VBIOS and GOP Driver.
– Support Next Generation Processors.”
But it was not clear whether the update includes Devil’s Canyon or Haswell Refresh CPUs only. Besides the BIOS was released way to early this year. It’s best to contact MSI support just to make sure.
I bought the ASRock Z87 Extreme 11/ac and it is not in the compatibility list 🙁
That is a big let down for such an expensive motherboard.
Like I said, the list above is not complete. Don’t loose hope yet. See if ASRock has released a BIOS update for your board. Usually high end Z87 motherboards are able to support Devil’s Canyon. Or ask somebody who has the same motherboard that you use and who was able to try DC on their system.

It seems that Intel changed the entire list with 9 series motherboards. At the time of posting this article, the motherboards mentioned above where the ones listed on Intel’s page, exactly. Damn, Intel must be discouraging AIB and people from using the Devil’s Canyon with the old system. Probably it’s Intel’s marketing move. Because if people can use the Devil’s Canyon with the older Z87 motherboards, there won’t be any reason to upgrade to Z97 and this would badly hurt the sales of Z97 motherboards. I’ll update this article and put a notation. Thanks for pointing that out.

MSI released a BIOS update (AMI BIOS – 2014-03-03 – v1.8) that will support Haswell Refresh. I’ve checked the page. But just to be sure, contact support if it will support Devil’s Canyon or Haswell Refresh K series as well.

Hi Ethan, the BIOS seems to be latest. But just to be sure, contact Gigabyte support and ask if that BIOS update will make your motherboard support Devil’s Canyon. The description didn’t specifically mentioned “for Haswell Refresh K Series or Devil’s Canyon”, unlike what Asus did.
What about Asus Maximus VI Gene?
Visit the Asus Maximus VI Gene page from Asus, go to Support -> Drivers & Tools, Select your OS. You should be able to see a BIOS update there

i have a msi B85M-G43 and i updated bios and when i changed my cpu to a i7 4790k my pc didnt work

No problem with ASrock Z97 and i5 4960k. The i5 4690K will be a good combo with any Z97 motherboard actually.

That’s actually a pretty general question.
There are several factors to consider in choosing a motherboard, and usually it really depends on the needs of the user.
But for i5-4690K Devil’s Canyon which is overclockable, I would recommend that you go with a Z97 motherboard, since H87 motherboards can not overclock a CPU.

Will I be able to update the BIOS with an i5 4690k installed? Or will I only
be able to update the BIOS with and older Haswell installed first?
