Patriot Viper 4 DDR4 2666MHz 16GB Memory Review

DDR4 is here and we are currently on a transition period where we say goodbye to DDR3 memory and say hello to the faster and more power efficient DDR4 memory. Today we are going to look at and review one of Patriot Memory’s DDR4 memory launched early this year, the Patriot Viper 4 DDR4 memory series. The Patriot Viper 4 DDR4 memory is built and designed for the Intel X99 high end desktop platform, the first platform to cater DDR4 memory. I’m not 100% sure that it will also run properly on the Skylake platform, I’m still waiting for our motherboards to arrive. But more or less it should function properly with Skylake motherboards as well. DDR4 memory is basically faster compared to its predecessor, the DDR3, and operates at a much lower operating voltage. Do note that DDR4 is not backwards compatible with DDR3 system, and you can’t use DDR3 memory on a DDR4 slot as well. The specific memory kit that we are going to review is the Patriot Viper 4 DDR4 2666MHz 16GB kit (PC4-21300). If you are planning to build an X99 system, or a Skylake system, stick around and find out if the Patriot Viper 4 DDR4 will suite your system.

Patriot Viper 4 DDR4 Memory Review

The Patriot Viper 4 DDR4 is currently one of the company’s DDR4 memory series available, aside from the Viper Extreme and Signature line. It’s basically designed for Intel X99 platform supporting DDR4 memory modules and is geared towards content creators, enthusiasts and power users who simply want the latest and fastest. I’m not totally sure how the Viper 4 will perform on Skylake motherboards, but they should perform and behave similarly with an X99 motherboard. We’ll find out that later when our Z170 motherboards arrive.

The Patriot Viper 4 DDR4 series features a custom design high performance low profile heat spreader to make sure that the memory is running within normal operating temperatures. It’s available in quad channel kits with speeds of up to 3000MHz. According Patriot Memory, they are using highest quality of ICs and are 100% hand tested on the latest Intel X99 platforms to ensure you will get an ultra-responsive faster overall system that can handle high memory intensive applications.

Aside from having speeds of up to 3000MHz, the Viper 4 memory module fully supports XMP 2.0 and has an operating voltage of 1.2V. It’s available in 16GB and 32GB kits and the company is offering a lifetime warranty. Another interesting feature that the Patriot Viper 4 DDR4 memory kit has is that it has sensors for temperature. Not all DDR4 (or DDR3) memory modules have temperature sensors on them.

Below is a screenshot of the SPD information of the Patriot Viper 4 DDR4-2666 16GB memory kit taken from AIDA64’s report. Let’s proceed to the next page and take a closer look at the memory itself.
