A couple of weeks ago, NVIDIA released its latest mid-range GPU, the GeForce RTX 4070, targeted toward 1440p gaming. But the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti is also targeted towards 1440p gaming. The difference is NVIDIA claims 100+ fps 1440p gaming for the RTX 4070 and 120+ fps 1440p gaming for the RTX 4070 Ti. Price-wise, the new RTX 4070 is $200 cheaper than the RTX 4070 Ti, and so far, it’s the GPU that offers the better value (cost/frame) in the RTX 40 series lineup. In this article, let’s find out if the RTX 4070 is good enough or if you should spend $200+ more for the RTX 4070 Ti. If you are also torn between these two GPUs, please continue reading our review comparison below.
GeForce RTX 4070 Ti vs. RTX 4070 Graphics Card – Which GPU Is Better?
The GeForce RTX 4070 GPU features NVIDIA’s Ada Lovelace architecture with AD104 GPU equipped with 5,888 CUDA Cores. It provides 29 FP32 Shader-TFLOPS of power for rendering traditional rasterized graphics. It also has 184 4th gen Tensor Cores offering 466 Tensor-TFLOPS (with Sparsity) for AI processing and DLSS; 46 3rd gen Ada RT Cores capable of 67 RT-TFLOPS for powering next-generation ray-traced graphics, and 12GB of GDDR6X memory.
Meanwhile, the RTX 4070 Ti has more CUDA cores, higher boost clock speed, and more GPC, TPC, SMs, etc. The only similarity is that the RTX 4070 Ti and RTX 4070 are based on the same AD104 GPU and have the same 12GB GDDR6X memory running on a 192-bit interface.
When it comes to power, the RTX 4070 Ti uses the new 16-pin 12VHPWR connector. Meanwhile, the RTX 4070 base models use the good-old 8-pin PCIe power connector, and the premium ones, including the RTX 4070 FE model, use the new 16-pin connector. So be mindful of that. Either way, most, if not all, RTX 40 series GPUs that use the new 16-pin PCIe5 connector usually have an adapter included.
Like the rest of the RTX 40 series GPUs, the RTX 4070 also supports DLSS 3 and NVIDIA’s 8th generation NVENC with AV1 support. You can check out the rest of the specifications in the table below. After that, let’s proceed directly to the benchmark results.

RTX 4070 Ti vs 4070 – Synthetic Benchmarks
The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti is generally faster than the RTX 4070 using 3DMark’s benchmark suite, but the difference varies depending on the test. For example, the RTX 4070 Ti is only 15% faster on the Fire Strike benchmark. But the performance difference became wider in the more demanding tests, more than 30%.
These are just synthetic benchmarks and are graphics scores. So, let’s find out next how these two GPUs compare in actual games.
GeForce RTX 4070 Ti vs 4070 – RT and DLSS Game Benchmarks
Above are a few game titles that feature ray tracing and/or DLSS. Generally speaking, the RTX 4070 Ti is more than 20% faster than the RTX 4070, depending on the resolution. For instance, in some game titles, the difference is minimal. However, in 1440p, their performance difference becomes apparent and substantial, especially at 4K, where the RTX 4070 Ti can be up to 32% faster.
Now let’s check out how their performance differs when it comes to traditional rasterization.
GeForce RTX 4070 vs 4070 Ti – Game Benchmarks
The pattern looks similar, and the RTX 4070 Ti is somewhere between 20% to 30% faster than the RTX 4070, depending on the title. However, if you look at the numbers, the RTX 4070 can drive games around 100 to 200+ fps in 1080p resolution and well above 100 fps in 1440p. The RTX 4070 can even reach around 60fps in 4K, except in graphics-intensive titles like Plague Tale: Requiem.
When it comes to raw performance, the RTX 4070 is no slouch at all. Well, we found out in our RTX 4070 review that it performs similarly to the previous generation RTX 3080 10G. However, when it comes to the latest game titles that are graphics-intensive, like Cyberpunk 2077, the RTX 4070 Ti offers a better gaming experience.
Let’s summarize the results that we got.
Summary Results
To be honest, I only tested the RTX 4070 Ti and RTX 4070 in 14 game titles. However, I think it is enough to give us an idea of their performance difference. 20% to 30% is a substantial performance difference, and I feel like I am comparing two different classes of GPU and not just a “Ti” version.
Generally speaking, we see a wider performance gap between the two GPUs at higher resolutions, like 1440p and 4K. For example, the RTX 4070 Ti is only around 18% faster on average in 1080p. However, in 1440p, the RTX 4070 Ti is now 24% faster, and at 4K, the 4070 Ti is around 25% faster on average.
Nevertheless, the GeForce RTX 4070 delivered more than 100+ fps in 1440p resolution. So, NVIDIA was spot on in its marketing materials. When it comes to power efficiency and temperature, obviously, the RTX 4070 wins. My RTX 4070 Ti consumes an average of 222 Watts on gaming. Meanwhile, the RTX 4070 consumed only 190 Watts on average.
I won’t compare temperatures since most RTX 4070 Ti have a big, chunky heatsink. Meanwhile, most RTX 4070 have smaller, “normal-sized” 2-slot body designs. Nevertheless, I have never seen both cards touch 70°C. Their temperature plays around 55°C to 65°C. The RTX 4070 Ti graphics cards are even cooler since they have larger heatsinks than the RTX 4070.
Now, let’s include the price in the comparison.
Price Difference and Availability
The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti starts at $799 for the base model. However, there is no Founders Edition for the RTX 4070 Ti, and most 4070 Ti cards in the market are the OC ones or premium models. So, only a few RTX 4070 Ti are selling for $799, but most are priced from $830 to $850, and some even at $899++.
Meanwhile, many RTX 4070 cards in the market are currently selling for $599 only, the base MSRP. Only a few custom RTX 4070 sells for more than $600, and usually, these are the more premium RTX 4070 cards with the 16-pin 12VHPWR connector.
The RTX 4070 Ti is around 33%+ more expensive than the RTX 4070. But the Ti variant is only about 20% to 25%++ faster, sometimes up to 30% depending on the game title. So, the RTX 4070 offers a (slightly) better value than the RTX 4070 Ti. But you do get more frames with the RTX 4070 Ti.
GeForce RTX 4070 vs. RTX 4070 Ti Conclusion – Which One?
As I mentioned earlier, there are two types of RTX 4070 cards—the base model and the more premium cards that come with the 16-pin 12VHPWR connector. If you’re wondering if the ones with the 16-pin PCIe connector are faster, they are not. The best that they could do is offer a couple more fps. But basically speaking, both the RTX 4070 cards with 8-pin PCIe power connector and 16-pin 12VHPWR power connector will perform similarly.
The OC version doesn’t even have a substantial performance difference from the non-OC version. Ultimately, all RTX 4070 cards in the market will perform similarly because NVIDIA controls how these GPUs perform. NVIDIA set a hard limit, and you can’t circumvent that limit even if you manually overclock these RTX 4070s.
In the end, both the RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Ti are excellent in their own way. So, I’ll simply highlight why you should choose one over the other in bullet form.
Choose RTX 4070 Ti If:
- If you are willing to spend around $800+ for a graphics card;
- If you game at 1440p, 1440p ultrawide, or even 4K but don’t want to spend more than $800 for a graphics card;
- If your case can support the size of these RTX 4070 Ti;
- If you want more FPS and play graphics-intensive game titles.
Choose RTX 4070 If:
- If you are only willing to spend around $600 for a graphics card;
- If you game at 1080p or 1440p;
- If you plan to build a small form factor PC, or your chassis doesn’t have room for a large graphics card;
- If you don’t plan to play or usually play graphics-intensive games and/or max out the graphics settings of every game you play.
There you have it; I hope this comparison between the RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Ti helped you decide. Finally, while the base models are usually cheaper, they typically have a lackluster design or aesthetics compared to the more premium models. If you are after the looks, expect to spend extra on the more premium models. You may also check out some of the best GeForce RTX 4070 custom cards here.
