WD Black 6TB Review: Conclusion

Based on the tests and the benchmark results that I got, there’s no doubt that the WD Black 6TB WD6001FZWX is currently the fastest hard drive I have ever tested. It’s faster than the lower capacity WD Black, or any color of WD drives available. It’s even generally faster than the Seagate 4TB SSHD ST4000DX001 I reviewed before. And if I am not mistaken, it’s even faster than WD’s Velociraptor 1TB despite having a 10,000 RPM speed.

Thanks to the increased processing power and larger cache, the WD Black 6TB definitely delivered its promised speed. On the average, the sequential read and write speeds are well above the 200MB/s margin. People who are using the WD Black 4TB (or lower capacity) should be able to feel the increase in performance that the new 6TB capacity has to offer. This makes it a really good storage option for creative professionals, enthusiasts and even gamers who are looking for a high performance hard drive that can hold a huge amount of files and data.

Aside from the stellar performance, there are a few things that I would like to mention. When it comes to temperature, the WD Black 6TB capacity can get hot specially during prolonged period of usage. It’s recommendable that the drive gets sufficient amount of air flow to keep it cool. At full speed, vibration is quite noticeable. It’s also advisable to use anti-vibration screws or rubber dampers to minimize the noise from vibration. Finally, although you can technically use the WD Black 6TB on a NAS system (I tried it on my QNAP HS-251), it’s not primarily designed for a NAS setup. And you are better off getting the WD Red Pro 6TB instead, offering more or less the same performance at a tad higher price. Lastly, it’s still not as fast as a good performing SSD. Applications, games and overall desktop operations still load faster with an SSD compared to the WD Black 6TB. But we can’t deny the fact that the WD Black offers a significant amount of storage capacity at much lower price vs your typical SSD.

Finally, WD has made a fantastic product in the form of the WD Black 6TB hard drive. This proves that the company continues to really push the boundaries of their storage solution. The WD Black 6TB is also back with a 5 year warranty making it a must have storage drive specially for those who are looking for a high performance storage solution.
