Finally, the 2nd Generation AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950X is now available to order. Early this month, AMD released the Threadripper 2990WX, a $1800 monster processor geared towards content creators and power users. This time, it’s the Threadripper CPU that is designed not only for content creators and prosumers, but for gamers as well. If you’re not aware yet, the 2nd gen. Threadripper CPUs primarily consist of two series, the WX and the X. The WX is designed for the “creators and innovators”; while the X series is designed for the enthusiasts and gamers. Finally, for those who are waiting for this CPU, you can now order a Threadripper 2950X for $899 USD. Check out more details about the 2nd Gen Ryzen Threadripper 2950X below.
2nd Gen. AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950X CPU Now Available
The 2nd Gen. AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950X is a 16-core 32-thread processor based on the 12nm Zen+ architecture. It has base clock speed of 3.5GHz and a boost clock speed of 4.4GHz. This CPU delivers up to 41% more multi-threaded performance compared to Intel’s Core i9-7900X. It feature the same core count with its predecessor, the 1950X; but feature a much higher clock speed and a $100 cheaper launch-price.
The Threadripper 2950X has 8 cores in each dies 0,1 and have an 8MB L2 cache (total) and 32MB L2 cache (total). It features 60 PCIe Gen2 lanes (+4 which is reserved for chipset) and supports quad channel memory. It also features Extended Frequency Range 2 (XFR2) and Precision Boost 2, as well as Precision Boost Overdrive.
2nd Gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors implement improved AMD SenseMI Technology with Precision Boost 2, and Extended Frequency Range 2 (XFR2) delivering the same generational performance uplifts seen on 2nd Gen Ryzen desktop processors. Additional performance and value are delivered for the enthusiast with:
- AMD StoreMI Technology: All X399 platform customers will now have free access to AMD StoreMI Technology enabling configured PCs to load files, games, and applications from a high-capacity hard drive at SSD-like read speeds.
- Ryzen Master Utility: Like all AMD Ryzen™ processors, 2nd Gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper CPUs are fully unlocked. With the updated AMD Ryzen Master Utility, AMD has added new features like fast core detection both on die and per-CCX, advanced hardware controls, and simple, one-click workload optimizations.
- Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO): A new performance—enhancing feature that allows multi-threaded boost limits to be raised by tapping into extra power delivery headroom in premium motherboards.
Price and Availability
The 2nd Gen. Ryzen Threadripper 2950X is now available with a retail price of $899 USD. It’s basically like half of the flagship processor AMD has; half in core/thread count, half in price but a little more than half in performance. Speaking of flagship, the Threadripper 2990WX is also available now for $1800 USD. You can check out the links below for latest pricing and availability.
