On Sony‘s PlayStation Blog, the company has revealed a new look for the PlayStation 5 console coming this holiday season. Although not officially called “PS5 Slim“, it features a smaller body design, and its storage capacity has been upgraded to 1TB. The previous model only had 825GB and weighs around 4.5 kg. Meanwhile, the new PS5 slim weighs only about 3.2 kg. There are no changes on the CPU and GPU side of things; I guess we won’t see the “PS5 Pro” anytime soon. The new slim PS5 is expected to roll out in November with an MSRP of $499.99 for the PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive and $449.99 for the Digital Edition. You can check out more details from Sony’s news below.
Sony Reveals PlayStation 5 Slim Edition
As the holiday season approaches, Sony is delighted to announce the launch of a new PS5 model. In response to the changing preferences of gamers, Sony’s engineering and design teams have worked together to introduce a more compact form factor that offers increased choice and versatility. This new model retains the advanced technological features that make the PS5 a leading gaming console while incorporating a smaller design. It also includes an attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive and an upgraded 1TB SSD, providing expanded internal storage capacity.
The new “slim” PS5 model boasts a significant reduction in volume by over 30% and a decrease in weight by 18% and 24% compared to its predecessors. It features four distinct cover panels, with the top section displaying a glossy finish while the bottom maintains a matte texture. For buyers of the PS5 Digital Edition, the Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive for PS5 can be added separately at a price of $79.99 USD, €119.99 EURO, £99.99 GBP, or 11,980 JPY.
The new PS5 (slim) model is set to launch in November in the U.S., initially at select local retailers and, where applicable, on direct.playstation.com. It will gradually become available worldwide over the coming months. As the existing PS5 inventory is depleted, the new PS5 model will become the sole available option.
