GeForce RTX 4060 vs Radeon RX 7600 XT GPU Comparison

AMD released its updated 1080p gaming GPU – the Radeon RX 7600 XT. It’s basically the RX 7600 GPU released last year but with a faster clock speed and double the VRAM. Based on specifications alone, the RX 7600 XT looks like a much better GPU than the RTX 4060. The RTX 4060 only has 8GB of memory, gimped memory specs, and only uses a PCIe x8 interface. Meanwhile, the RX 7600 XT has 16GB of VRAM, full PCIE x16 support, and faster clock speed. Although, the RX 7600 XT is a bit more expensive than the RTX 4060. In this article, let’s find out which GPU is better, the RTX 4060 8GB or RX 7600 XT 16GB.

RTX 4060 8GB vs RX 7600 XT 16GB, Which GPU To Pick for 1080p Gaming?

The GeForce RTX 4060 8GB

Let’s start with their specs and features. The GeForce RTX 4060 is based on the AD107 GPU and equipped with 3,072 CUDA Cores, providing 15 FP32 Shader-TFLOPS of power for rendering traditional rasterized graphics. It has 96 4th gen Tensor cores offering 242 FP8 Tensor-TFLOPS (with Sparsity) for AI processing and DLSS and 24 3rd gen Ada RT Cores capable of 35 RT-TFLOPS for powering next-generation ray-traced graphics.

Since the RTX 4060 belongs to the RTX 40 series family, it features and supports DLSS 3 and DLSS 3.5, a.k.a. AI Frame Generation and Frame Reconstruction, respectively. Aside from DLSS, NVIDIA’s upscaling solution, these features will help the RTX 4060, especially in graphics-intensive or demanding scenarios. It also supports AV1 encoding and NVIDIA encoder.

However, the RTX 4060 only has 8GB of GDDR6 memory, with only 272 Gb/s of bandwidth running on a 128-bit interface. Conversely, it offers a higher 17Gbps memory data rate and a larger 24MB of L2 cache. Another downside to the RTX 4060 is its PCIe Gen4 connection, which is only PCIe x8, not the full x16.

The Radeon RT 7600 XT 16GB

The AMD Radeon RX 7600 XT features 2048 Stream Processors, 32 Compute Units, 32 Ray Accelerators, and 64 AI accelerators. It is based on a 6nm manufacturing process and features AMD’s RDNA 3 architecture.

The RX 7600 XT has 2470MHz game clock speed and up to 2755MHz boost clock speed. It also features 16GB GDDR6 memory with a clock speed of 18Gbps and up to 476.9 GB/s memory bandwidth running on a 128-bit interface. The RX 7600 XT has the upper hand when it comes to VRAM.

When it comes to added features, the RX 7600 XT supports AV1 encoding, AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution, AMD RSR, and it supports the recently released AMD Fluid Motion Frames. AFMF is the company’s version of DLSS 3 Frame Generation. However, the AFMF implementation is on the driver level, and it supports the current RX 7000 and the previous RX 6000 series GPUs.

Unfortunately, AMD is still new to Frame Generation; only a few games support it yet, and it still needs improvements. Not to mention, AMD’s FSR quality is still inferior to NVIDIA’s DLSS.

Below are the specifications of the RTX 4060 8GB and RX 7600 XT 16GB GPUs. After that, let’s get straight to the benchmark results.

For synthetic benchmarks, I used 3DMark’s benchmark suite and 12 games for rasterization. I did not do any ray tracing in this comparison since the RX 7600 XT isn’t really a good GPU for ray tracing, as you can see from the Speed Way test below.

GeForce RTX 4060 8GB vs Radeon RX 7600 XT 16GB – Synthetic Benchmarks

rtx 4060 vs rx 7600 xt 3dm benchmark

In the 3DMark benchmark suite, the RX 7600 XT is generally faster in Fire Strike benchmarks only. However, the RTX 4060 outperformed it in Time Spy and Port Royal. I already know that the RTX 4060 would outperform the RX 7600 XT in the Speed Way benchmark. The RTX 4060 is about 36% faster than the RX 7600 XT in Speed Way, a DX 12 test involving ray tracing.

These are just synthetic benchmarks and are graphics scores. So, let’s find out how these two GPUs compare in actual games next.

RTX 4060 vs RX 7600 XT Game Benchmarks

I only tested these two GPUs in 1080p and 1440p. These GPUs are meant for 1080p gaming. But depending on the game title, either GPU can play some games at 1440p with decent frame rates. However, for graphics-intensive game titles, you may need to tone down the graphics settings and/or use upscaling technology to help increase the frame rates. Below are the results I got:

Out of the 12 games I tested these GPUs with, the RX 7600 XT is generally faster in 8 games. There are only four game titles where the RTX 4060 is faster. The RTX 4060 is noticeably faster than the RX 7600 XT in The Witcher 3. That’s already a given since this game likes NVIDIA GPUs.

Surprisingly, the RX 7600 XT outperformed the RTX 4060 in Cyberpunk 2077 – an NVIDIA-sponsored title. Although it only outperformed the RTX 4060 in pure rasterization, no ray tracing was involved. However, the RX 7600 XT’s lead is just by a few FPS, nothing really substantial.

If you play Call of Duty a lot, or most of the time, you will get a higher frame rate with AMD GPUs. The RX 7600 XT is noticeably faster than the RTX 4060 in this game title.

Summary Results

rtx 4060 vs rx 7600 xt average benchmark

Combining and averaging the results shows that the RX 7600 XT is generally faster than the RTX 4060. By how much? Well, the RX 7600 XT is about 4% faster in 1080p and only 3% faster in 1440p. That’s not a lot, and that difference is unnoticeable while playing games.

We have established the performance of each card in terms of frame rate. Let’s now discuss their current pricing and other factors to consider when choosing between these two GPUs.

Price Difference and Availability

NVIDIA’s MSRP for the GeForce RTX 4060 is $299, while AMD’s MSRP for the Radeon RX 7600 XT is $329. The RTX 4060 has been in the market since last year, but there’s no price movement (yet). The cheapest RTX 4060 is still around $299++. Meanwhile, the RX 7600 XT was just released a few days ago. Since there is no Made By AMD RX 7600 XT graphics card, most are custom-designed cards with factory overclock settings. Depending on the model, they sell for around $340 to $380.

As for availability, plenty of RTX 4060 and RX 7600 XT graphics cards are in the market. There’s no need to buy from a 3rd party retailer that jack up the prices.

GeForce RTX 4060 vs Radeon RX 7600 XT Conclusion

We already established that the RX 7600 XT is about 3% to 4% faster than the RTX 4060 based on the results I got. Regarding pricing, the RX 7600 XT is about 10% pricier than the RTX 4060. That doesn’t look good for the RX 7600 XT.

About the RTX 4060

While the RTX 4060 seems to be the reasonable option between the two, there are a few things you need to consider or take note of. The RTX 4060 only has 8GB of VRAM. If you are playing older game titles or games that are not so graphic-intensive, 8GB may be sufficient. However, if you are playing graphics-intensive games requiring more VRAM, 8GB is insufficient, resulting in a stuttering and not-so-pleasant gaming experience. You must tone down the graphics settings, especially in graphics-intensive game titles like Resident Evil 4 Remake, Last of Us, Forspoken, etc.

Another issue with the RTX 4060 is its gimped memory and only PCIE x8. It’s not using the full x16. However, NVIDIA increased its cache to somehow mitigate this. Not to mention, it supports DLSS 3 Frame Generation and DLSS 3.5 Ray Reconstruction, which may be beneficial depending on the game or scenario.

But honestly, I wouldn’t buy any of these two GPUs if I want to play and enjoy games with ray tracing involved. Ray tracing is too graphics intensive and requires a much faster GPU for an enjoyable gaming experience.

About the RX 7600 XT

While the RX 7600 XT is generally faster than the RTX 4060 and has double the VRAM, it’s also a bit more expensive. And I don’t think you will really need 16GB of VRAM for 1080p gaming. I think 12GB would have been enough, even for graphics intensive titles.

Aside from the slightly higher price, the RX 7600 XT is not an efficient GPU. It can consume around 200W of power, significantly higher than the RTX 4060 (~110W to 120W), just to outperform it by a mere 4% lead.

Another thing to consider is the upscaling and frame generation technology. AMD has FSR, but when compared to NVIDIA’s DLSS quality, the latter is superior. AMD is also new to frame generation. They recently released AMD Fluid Motion Frames or AFMF. The good thing, though, is that AFMF’s implementation is on the driver level and supports RX 7000, RX 6000, and even a Ryzen 8000G APU. But don’t expect it to be on the same level as NVIDIA. Even now, AMD still needs to catch up and improve its upscaling technology.

So, Which One?

If I am stuck between the two options, honestly I would go for the RTX 4060, considering their current pricing and performance. The RTX 4060 is more efficient than the RX 7600 XT and is a bit cheaper. It also has a better video encoder (NVENC) and has better upscaling technology. I may consider the RX 7600 XT if it is priced below $300.

Outside these two GPUs, there are plenty of options, including the second-hand market. The good thing is there is no scarcity when it comes to supply, and plenty of graphics cards are selling at MSRP and even below.
