Asus TUF Gaming A16 Laptop with Ryzen 9 7940HX and RTX 4070 Laptop GPU Now Available: Good Value Under $2,000?

Asus’ TUF lineup focuses more on value and performance. Products under the TUF series usually have a more industrial look and design. They are usually not flashy, nor are they head turners, nor do they have over-the-top specs. Asus’ new TUF Gaming A16 laptop is no exception. While its physical design looks plain, it has AMD’s Ryzen 9 7940HX mobile CPU under the hood and NVIDIA’s RTX 4070 laptop GPU. Those two alone are quite powerful components. The Asus TUF Gaming A16, model FA607PI, retails for $1,799.99, which is not cheaper. But is it worth it? Let’s check out more of its features below.

The 2024 TUF Gaming A16 is the fastest TUF laptop from Asus to date

As mentioned, the Asus TUF Gaming A16 gaming laptop is powered by an AMD Ryzen 9 7940HX processor. This 16-core and 32-thread mobile processor can handle daily tasks and even some demanding workloads. For its memory, it has a 16GB DDR5-5200MHz dual-channel configuration (2x 8GB). There are additional slots for memory and storage if the user wants to expand the capacity.

Since this is a gaming laptop, expect a gaming GPU as well. It has NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4070 laptop GPU, with NVIDIA Advanced Optimus for high framerate and low-latency gaming. Now, remember that the performance of an RTX 4070 laptop GPU is not the same as that of an RTX 4070 desktop GPU. Although they have similar names, both GPUs are completely different. An RTX 4070 laptop GPU performs just about as well as an RTX 4060 Ti 8GB desktop GPU, dive or take.

Chassis and Design

The TUF Gaming A16, known for its durability, meets the 2024 Military MIL-STD-810H standards, ensuring it can withstand vibrations, shocks, and extreme temperatures and altitudes. Launched in 2024, this model boasts a new 16-inch display and a chassis redesign inspired by the sturdy mecha seen in anime and games, giving it a modern and sleek appearance. It comes in Mecha Gray with an embossed logo and includes TUF branding on the trackpad and a logo under the keyboard.

The TUF Gaming A16 also features USB-C® PD charging for easy mobility alongside a long-lasting 90Wh battery. The desktop-like keyboard has a deep travel distance of 1.7mm for comfortable typing and gaming, above a large touchpad for precise movement in games and content creation alike.

Regarding its display, the TUF Gaming A16 features a 16-inch screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio, thin bezels for a 90% screen-to-body ratio, and options for up to 2.5K resolution. It offers a 165Hz refresh rate and a 3ms response time, ideal for clear and fast-paced gaming.

The gaming experience is enhanced by G-SYNC® to reduce stuttering and screen tearing and an IPS-level panel for accurate colors. The addition of Dolby Atmos® and Hi-Res Audio makes for an immersive sound environment suitable for both competitive and narrative games.

So, Is It Worth It?

Based on its specs sheet alone, the Asus TUF Gaming A16 looks like an excellent and powerful gaming laptop for under $2,000. The 16GB DDR5 and 1TB SSD configuration currently retails for $1,799.99. While it is a bit more expensive than other RTX 4070-based gaming laptops, it is still cheaper than an ROG Strix RTX 4070 gaming laptop (retailing above ~$2,000).

Prices of these laptops do change, though. But the new TUF Gaming A16 2024 version looks promising. And I think it deserved to be in the best RTX 4070 gaming laptops as well. You can check the latest pricing and availability here.
